De Sixtijnse Kapel Gianluigi Colalucci, Pierluigi de Vecchi In 1980 after thorough research the Directors of the Vatican Museums decided to proceed with the restoration of Michelangelo's frescos in the Sistine Chapel. The restoration of the ceiling with the Creation and the Fall was completed in 1989. On 9 April 1994 453 years after Michelangelo put the finishing touches to it the altar wall with the Last Judgment was also restored. It will not however be necessary to travel to Rome to admire the frescos in all their brilliance. In the two-volume publication Mercatorfonds have devoted to them you can see them as clearly as if you were standing on the scaffolding with the artist. Many scholars were surprised at the difference in colors. In a certain sense, they should not have been. Another painting by Michelangelo, in Florence, had been cleaned during the 1950s, and revealed colors very similar in their intensity to those that appeared in the Sistine Chapel Ceiling after its cleaning.
